Deadliest Warrior

Blood on The Sand: William Wallace vs. Shaka Zulu

William Wallace and Shaka Zulu are locked in a duel to the death, and the floors of Deadliest Warrior’s dojo will run red with the blood of legends tonight at 10.

This is our first (and only) named battle of the season. This time, we’re not testing types of warriors, but two men who wrote their way into history with the blood of their enemies. Consider each man in his time and place, his natural context:

William Wallace was a 13th century Scottish Knight whose legendary resistance of English rule transformed him from a renowned warrior into a symbol of national pride. Wallace was one of several Guardians of Scotland who lead campaigns against the English during the first Scottish War of Independence.  Often outmanned and outmatched by the English, Wallace lead Scots to victory in the face of insurmountable odds at the Battle of Stirling Bridge, a feat that earned him his knighthood. He was ultimately defeated at the Battle of Falkirk, a loss that prompted his resignation as a commander and forced Wallace into hiding until his eventual capture in 1305.

Wallace’s ferocious reputation on the battlefield preceded him, and though he was one of several commanders who helped wage the Scottish War of Independence, he is the most beloved. Much of his history is intermixed freely with legend thanks in large part to an epic poem written about his life in the 15th century. While accurate histories are available, Wallace has become difficult to separate from his near mythical status thanks in large part to such films as Braveheart.

Shaka (and he was largely known as “just” Shaka. We add “Zulu” to his name as modern reminder of his kingdom, but if you want to get technical, you can call him Shaka kaSenzangakhona, meaning “Shaka son of Senzangakhona”) was a Zulu king who reigned in the first half of the 19th century. Under his reign, the Zulu Kingdom expanded and absorbed a number of northern kingdoms, to such an extent that it is sometimes referred to as the Zulu Empire.

Alternately praised and denounced as a military genius who reformed the Zulu army’s strategy, weaponry, and composition, Shaka ruled with iron fist until his assassination at the hands of his half-brothers. The military reforms he made ensured that the Zulu empire was a force to be reckoned with well into the latter half of the 19th century. Despite the Zulu’s eventual defeat at the hands of the British, the tenacity with which they fought to retain their independence earned the Zulu people a ferocious reputation within the British Empire. Their successes in this struggler were due in large part to the teachings and reforms of Shaka, who had set them out 50 years prior.

These short descriptions hardly do either warrior justice—I highly recommend that you seek out additional material on each fighter. But if I had to distill this battle down and reduce all of its components to a single thought, it would be that this is a battle of mind-sets. Shaka was a conqueror; he forged an empire in his image, and left a legacy of military dominance in his wake. William Wallace resisted English rule; he fought to preserve the freedom of his people, and he is remembered for his victories in the face of overwhelming odds.

Both men are leaders, but of different styles, reach, and calibers. Shaka built an empire, while Wallace fought to stop one.

Neither man was taken on the field of battle. A Scot loyal to King Edward betrayed Wallace, while Shaka’s half brothers attempted to assassinate him at least twice before they finally succeeded.

However, leadership is just one aspect of tonight’s fight. Both men were skilled in actual combat, not just leading others, and both men possess wildly differing arsenals. Frankly, it’s a hard fight to offer any insight into.

Wallace does have the technology advantage. His gear is heavier, and his armor is more robust than Shaka’s shield. But Shaka has ways around armor, and isn’t as encumbered as Wallace. He’s quick on his feet, both mentally and physically—he has to be, otherwise he wouldn’t have survived multiple assassination attempts. It’s enough to make me doubt my usual faith in superior armaments.

Additionally, both fighters were extremely hardy. When it comes to toughness, and we’re talking about that gut level toughness, deep down underneath the armor, you’d be hard pressed to find two warriors that could equal these two. We certainly were.

This was a hard battle to test for, and a hard battle to run. I have a difficult time finding a weakness or flaw in either warrior, especially at the individual level. Truly, this is a battle of greats.

Aside from all that, there are a few other bits of business I should mention here:

First, our final episode is going to air early! Instead of airing next Tuesday at 10 PM, IRA vs. Taliban will be broadcast on Sunday, May 31st, at 9 PM Eastern and Pacific.

Second, for those of you who are curious about matchups between fictional characters, be sure to catch “GameTrailers TV Presents: The 2009 VGAs-E3 First Look Special” this Thursday at 11 PM on Spike. The folks over at GTTV were cool enough to have me come talk about a certain matchup near and dear to my heart, but even better than that, they’re going to have a ton of sneak peak footage for upcoming games.

That’s it for this week. As usual, be sure to leave us your comments for The Aftermath, and we’ll do our best to get to them.

Morituri te salutant,
Max

The whole Series of this show is who has the better weapons and the armor. Like the Ninja vs Spartan. The ninja had more skill but the Spartan had armor, really good armor and the ninja did not, and the Spartan also had better weapons. Right now I'm voting for Wallace because he has steal weapons and Armor while Zulu has armor also but not as good as Wallace, and Wallace has much more better weapons. Steel vs Wood and rocks. (Not quite sure what Zulu used) Still i think Wallace will own Zulu

gosh...your Tv show is fun,but....It's ridicilous in the same time....You mesure how much kills each warrior got only by weapon! This ridicilous! You never pay any damn attention to warriors skills! How an example:spetsnaz vs green beret....Did you know that spetsnaz have skills of no contact combat?Or that ninjas were able to jump 20ft in the air,it's scientifictly proved...Guys,before you doing some dumass battle do a nice research, don't just go and make people angry, because some of your episods are bullshit!

If we learned anything from last week it should have been that superior weapons can win a contest, with the hooks getting tons of wins. Wallace wins hands down, though I have been wrong before. BTW if anyone important is reading this Spike should have at least an aftermath if not a rematch for Viking vs. Samurai. That episode left a lot of people bitter and left so many questions out there that some response is needed. If you want to see what I mean go to "Thrand's Aftermath" on youtube.

Shaka Zulu will win to make it politically correct. Seriously one-one one fight without the political bs Wallace would destroy him. The only hope Shaka Zulu would of had would be the rifle. If you put metal vs wood its not that hard to figure. The time differences are a few hundred years apart and still Wallace would destroy him. They both were supposed tall but Wallace has armor, metal weapons, and actual combat. Shaka Zulu's combat not much he led not fought!

    YellowFlash:
i'm sorry to be blunt, but saying that the ninja had more skill than the Spartan is pretty stupid, let me know when you have evidence of ninjas beating invaders, even when they are completely outnumbered. The battle of Thermopylae wasn't the only battle where Spartans were completely outnumbered, and the Spartans essentially won the war for all of Greece. What did the ninjas do again? besides taking on a few samurai. Spartans were the best at what they did and what they did wasn't very nice.

I love that William Wallace is being shown on Deadliest Warrior. He is a representation of how strong the Scots are. If there were no gun fights Wallace would be the all time Deadliest Warrior, minus Chuck Norris or Bruce Lee of course.

Achilles VS Hercules? I dunno much about Achilles except for that ferschluggener heel of his and Hercules fought the Hulk and walked away. So yeah, I'd give it to Herc. Also, he had an impenetrable Lion skin cloak.

First, lemme say that yes it would suck if the only black guy this season lost, but I don't think sPike is doing this show to be PC. If they were, Green Berets would have beat sPetznaz.

Second, steel doesn't necessarliy determine a fight. The Apache beat the Gladiator 2 out of 3 times because of the range and vervatility of his weapons.

Third, the fight should end with the two at each other's necks when all of a sudden the King of England shows up and announces his superiority over both. Then the two team up and chase him away, freeze frame on their smiles at his terror.

He may be from an earlier time but Shaka Zulu prob'ly won't have steel weapons. If the show gets a new season I hope they use 1 of my 4 guys

I'm not as concerned about who will win so much as that I'm seeing a trend in the show towards pitting Strength-Based Fighters against Finesse-Based Fighters (as seen with Apache vs. Gladiator, Ninja vs. Spartan, Shaolin Monk vs. Maori Warrior...). Not to say that either fighter in this article is clearly one or the other, but I've seen the trend in the aforementioned episodes.

Should Mark happen upon this comment, I would like him to address that...but more importantly, I want to know if an episode will be aired near the end of the season where some of the fighters will return to fight against different partners (i.e. pit the Spartan and the Knight against each other this time, as well as perhaps the Ninja vs. Apache or something for contrast) and put a bunch of those new match-ups in the span of one or two end-of-season finales.

Besides airing another episode or two to cap off the season, it would also put to rest some of the 'who would win in a fight?' questions that I've gained from watching the show.

The heavy spears and javelins of the Zulu army may prove to be a match for the lightly armoured Scottish resistance fighter, and when it comes to specific people I think Wallace will be physically over matched. But I still think that the steel weapons will destroy the more primitive Zulu defenses.

I can't say I know a lot about either warrior, but this analysis helped. As much as I am rooting for Wallace, I have a gut feeling the match will be a close one. Both warriors have amazing skills, but while they may both me incredibly skilled, their skills towards each other may not be so undisputed. I have a feeling both warriors will be neck & neck in terms of kills, and this seems like a very promising episode. Go Wallace :D

If Shaka Zulu met Wallace, he'd die. An ox shield vs. a friggin' steel claymore. And did they ever look into their personality? Revenge is a menace, and Wallace was fueled by it. Shaka Zulu simply wanted governmental control.

I believe that if the show-makers do this right, Shaka will, in a very close battle, win.

Sure, William Wallace had chainmail and big shiny swords,

But his real power truly lied in his ability to lead others,

And while yes, he was definatly a skilled combatant,

Shaka paved his road to power by defeating the leaders of other tribes.

The dude knew how to kill, and kill he did.

I'm not saying that William Wallace is weak in any way, but I am saying that in a brutal reality, Shaka Zulu would win on tactics and agility alone.
