    First? LOL

I gotta say, this outcome surprised me more than any of the previous ones at first. It seemed that barely any of the Pirate's weapons could outright kill the Knight unless they got lucky whereas anything the Knight used would have killed the Pirate straight off the bat. But I guess gun powder's just too much of a game changer.

This episode of The Aftermath was a bit dissapointing. They didn't address many big forum questions like (though they did talk about the chainmail) what happened to incuding the sheild in the test? They also didn't mention how the heck did the grenado beat the morning star (flail) in the fight or why the crossbow wasn't just as (if not more) effective as the blunderbuss. While I still believe the episode was unfair by overglorifying that one pellet from the blunderbuss that got through the plate armor and by not testing the knight's armor to its fullest potential, the episode was still very entertaining and educational.

They haven't factored the shields in for any of the westerners. That's the key advantage they had over other warriors. I know if someone pointed a gun or threw a grenade at me I'd be ducking behind my shield. And with any pirate weapon you've got one shot. That equals dead pirate to me.

I would like to first say that i enjoy the show very much and appreciate the simulations. As far as the Pirate vs. Knight,i thought it would've been a better matchup if it was a Knight Templar. Looking forward to the next episode-keep up the good work. May i suggest some of the South American peoples for a future simulation? It would be nice to see Aztecs Incas or Mayans against a Highlander for example.

Chain mail protects against slashing weapons. Plate was designed to protect against penetrating weapons. Even in the middle ages, crossbow bolts were effective at piercing both kinds of armor, which is why the Pope banned them: crossbow bolts allowed a peasant to kill a knight. Longbows were equally effective and in the hands of a skilled bowman had a faster rate of fire. The French lost the Battle of Agincourt to bowmen.

The pirate's pistolshot likely bounced off the curiass because it was made of lead and flattened on impact. The smashed bullet is seen in the slow motion rebound. Since the blunderbuss had iron shot, those projectiles penetrated the armor. If the pistol had an iron ball it would have punched right through the breastplate.

All this proves is that once again, the warrior with the superior ranged weapon wins. Never bring a knife to a gun fight.

They totally dodged all of the big issues in this episode. They touched on chain mail a bit, but they did not address the issue of the chain mail WITH the plate mail, WITH the leather padding, not to mention the sheild. They did not address the problem of the grenado's kills. In the test, the grenado didnt damage any part of the pig that the armor was on.

They needed to do more tests with the powder weapons, such as looking at the misfire rate after tussling with a foe.

Considering that the pirates only kills came from the grenado and the blunderbuss, the issues that were not mentioned would effectively void any and all of the pirate's kills. Removing pieces of armor would be the only way that a pirate would kill the knight at all.

This was terribly unsatisfying. The last bit Max put out there about the willingness to retest was the only thing that was worth talking about. I am extremely disappointed that no one addressed many the VERY questionable issues with the Grenado, and how the pirate would be able to light it with the absense of matches...not to mention the damage it was cause to himself. I would like to invite you to read my blog about all this business, it shouldn't be hard to find (Pirate Vs. Knight: A Realistic Analyzation). Hopefully someone from the show will give it a glance.

Aww come on guys.... That dude was right, a Morningstar IS a type of mace, not a type of flail. The original German word translates as "Morningstar" for a MACE with spiked sphere on top, and a different name specifically to distinguish the similar type of flail that translates as "Chainmorningstar".
It was irrelevant to which would win, Knight or Pirate, because what's in a name? But you could at least double check your facts and admit when you're wrong if someone calls you on it.

Granted I don't know what all testing you cut from the show, but I think there'd be a SIGNIFICANT difference in the effectiveness of the black powder weapons with the shield and chainmail added in. The knight MAY not recognize the first pistol as a projectile threat, but after that ANY sane warrior will be putting his shield between him and the shooter for every subsequent shot. At that point the unreliable killing power of the blunderbuss is probably mostly negated by having to go through a second layer of steel plate. At that point most of the major damage would be limited to the unshielded limbs.

Way to dodge all of the hard questions guys...didn't address the shield issue, didn't address the actual lethality of the grenado against plate armor, and didn't address the cutless not being used against the plate. Instead you focused on what a weapon is called that wasn't even used, a pirate's "training", and how honorable knights were? What's the point of the aftermath if you don't answer questions that EVERYONE is asking?

Great Aftermath. This episode (Pirate vs. Knight) was my favorite so far. I do think it would have been good to talk about why the crossbow didn't perform as expected; and particularly why it seemed worse than the bows used in previous episodes (the Apache and Samurai bows) . I'm guessing it has to do with rate of fire, but it would have been good to have a specific comment about that. I think that might be interesting for the Aftermath; since Max and Barry both say what surprised them about the outcome, they might mention how their expectations were influenced by the performance of weapons in previous episodes. It kind of ties the episodes together. Anyway, great show, great Aftermath, can't wait for the next one.

Ok, i have to say that the outcome for me was very surprising and overall B.S. The knight could kill the pirates with any of his weapons. The pirate only had blunderbus and grenado. The knight had almost all of the edges! The simulation was not correct at all. Plus no matter how many good weapons the knights had, they gave them no respect. They heavly favoured the pirates. KNIGHTS OWN!!!!!

i kind off chapped i mean i like the show a lot but in the last episode, pirate vs knight you did not take into account the weight of the knights armor. this would slow him down dramatically, the armor and weapons almost doubles the weight of the knight. just something you guys should take into consideration.

It all depends on some key factors like terrain. On ship.. the pirate wins. Also, if the knight is mounted he wins. There are so many factors.. no way to really know.

my question for knight vs pirate... in the demo thing w/ the guys fighting, the knight was mounted... were the sims run w/ this in play? cuz honestly, the pirate should have dominated the fights if you're mounting those knights, because to a gun, a horse is a big easy target, easily accomidating the accuracy issues of hitting a human w/ the pirate's guns/grenado. so, if we start killing the horse w/ regularity, as it goes down, it either falls on the knight... which is as good as killing him or he gets thrown off... which is as good as killing him. that horse could make a real difference in how successful the pirate is at getting to circumvent that armor.

that said, clearly, if it came down to a fair hand to hand battle, obviously the knight walks out of there w/ an easy victory. the pirate just has to keep the fight from being fair.

lastly, for those advocating the cross bow... obviously you've never fired a crossbow while wearing a helm. your vision is impaired in a bascinet or burgunot or similar styled great helm, there's no way of getting around that. sure, the crossbow was more reliable than the blunderbuss, but it was not more accurate in the hands of a fully helmed knight.

They seemed to have dodged all of the questions fairly well. bravo. Obviously Geiger has worn chainmail and been shot before with it on. Obviously the ball was not slowed at all by the armor and went into the skin at full speed. The Grenado was not talked about. Moving at all with the blunder buss loaded unless it was strapped in perfect position the shot or power would have been jarred. This episode has done little if anything to answer the questions given by the audience other than to try and take the experts word over hard evidence.

Woah. Haha. They used my post.

    Cool.

The main point I was trying to make with that question was the fact that they need to pay a little more attention to the final live action battle. Because by what ive seen that is what people are getting most pissed off about and it takes away from the fact that it was just a cool entertainment thing to show the overall winner. But by the damage that was shown that was done by that weapon, the final sim makes little sense. Also the explanation was a little weak. We have to assume that a knight who (we assume again) that has trained with that weapon for years is charging on a horse, giving the pirate little to no time to move, only gets a glancing blow? Sorry but I dont really buy that. I know what a mace is. And a morningstar is a type of mace. It is stationary on top but instead of a type of clubbed on knotched head like a normal mace it has a spiked head.

And by me correcting them on the name was again just trying to help because ive seen people get so mad over the small inaccuracies of this show sometimes. I like the show and want to see it for a long time. I just dont want people to get distracted by such dumb stuff as a name of a weapon (which ive seen happen with people on here).

Just a little constructive critcism from a fan. Thanks for addressing my statement though.

Great show and the most accurate comparison reditioning I've ever heard of. However a couple inconsistencies need be mentioned about this episode.

    1) The Morningstar is a large club with spikes protruding from the end. A Flail has a wooden haft with a chain link attachment ended in one or more impact balls. The morningstar derived from the club whereas the flail came to the battlefield from a farmers tool as most medieval weapons did. The greatest reason behind the utilization of the flail is to wrap around an opponents shield and still kill.

    2) The pope prohibited crossbows not due to their deadless but instead due to their ease of training combined with the ability to pierce armor. Thus a peasant trained for two weeks can effectively kill the best trained of knights. Peasant's killing wealthy nobles that often tithe to the church is a no no.

Just my $.02, thx for the show...

You gotta love these knight lovers saying that the nights are the ultimate killing machines :-) The bottom line there's a reason why armor and knights are history. It's because of guns. Guns made knights obsolete. All those knight weapons didn't help... You can't dance around this :-)

ok seriusly. The concept of the show's meaning of "warrior" is totally fucked up. Warriors were people that were trained and knew how to use their tools for combat of war. Mafias and Yakuza, hell they dont train for that shit they are thugs and bandits, same with pirtates. and ninjas are assasins for fuck's sake. It seems you guys are running out of ideas awfully quick. Theres ALOT of warrior tribes both from the past and present, that you woudlnt need to even put the stupid pirates and mafias into this show. Even in the middle ages alone there's alot of ancient warrior tribes that could match the spartans, knights, samurai, and viking, like the mongols and some of the warriors int ancient chinise dynasties, lots of warrior tribes in africa and middle east as well, u just gota research more geez. Mafia and yakuza.. wut bullshit is this.

Something they are not mentioning. Coming from someone who knows a bit about armor and weapons agains armor (yes, I know these things). The cutlass is a slashing, close quarters weapon. Not effective for cutting through plate or even chain armor. As for the blunderbuss. Sure, 1 pellet found it's way through the plate armor. 1 BB sized pellet is not a killing shot. Even in the head, it's not a 1 shot, 1 kill. Even unarmored after the one and only Pirate shot anyone would be able to close the distance and if nothing else. Take the Pirate with him. Now, is it me, or did the grenade fuse run rather slowly and yet blow up at the right moment even with the Pirate in range? Plus, the armored knight was rendered obsolete 300 years before Pirates even existed. This was the worst episode.

One thing I don't like about this show. They don't give any real world information. All the information given is Hollywood conjecture, offered to the Lowest Common Denominator. They are pandering not educating.

I would like to know why in the samurai vs viking why the samurai did not have a zanbato? Although the samurai won I think it would have been far deadlier with a zanbato. It was a sword that was used to cleave a horse and the rider in half. I also think the match ups should have been a bit different. The knight definitely should have fought the samurai and the pirate the ninja just to give the viewers a better show and get more viewers. Pirate vs. Viking would've been a great match up to they're both seafaring fighters that ravaged the seas and raped and pillaged

Two major issues not already mentioned:
1-My father had a black powder flintlock rifle he would use at target ranges. The best fire rate he would get was about one out of three; a big reason flintlocks were replaced by percussion caps and cartridges. This seemed to be overlooked.
2-Major error: The halberd was never a knights' weapon, it was used by Swiss infantry to counter knights. The spike on the top was used to set against charges; the blunt side was used to dismount riders; the heavy axe was used to cleave armor.

These 'researchers' need to work on their basic research...

Truth: This is what I was on about before. The creators of this show do nothing but pander to those who've never actually researched any of the subjects. They give Hollywood conjecture as proven fact. The show has entertainment value and nothing more. No real education content.

On a side note. The Shuriken was NOT a killing weapon. The blades are not enough to cut deeply into the body for major injury. They were deterents, nothing more. Only a very lucky shot into the jugular vein would result in a kill.

Hey, i love the show, i like how its done, with some the other match ups i may have been dissapointed with the result but found it interesting, and agreed with result . But.....

with this pirate vs. knight one i found the testing to be unfair in 3 ways(not whining just some constructive critisism)

1-the grenada vs. morning star, it seemed that it was given to the grenada just because it looked impressive, there was no test of accuracy or range, and it was just assumed that it would be timed perfectly to explode in the air, also it did not peirce armor (just plate, excluding that their would have been padding and mail under the plate), it seemed that, even under the conditions shown it was not even close to a 100% kill rate.

2-for the guns- there was ablolutly no account for how unreliable these were, my thoughts were -if the powder falls away if the gun is turned sideways, rendering the weapon useless, then in the middle of combat (doging attacks and such) the weapon would fail after being jolted around in the slightest. even in perfect conditions the blunderbuss (the only thing that seemed to be able to get through armor) Failed 1 in 3 times. not saying its not effective, just that the probable failyour of the weapon should have been taken into acount along with how the gun loses its use when jerked around, eg-could not be used after dodging or really any strong action.

3-swords, the knights sword went through the pig, the pirate sword went most of the way through , also armor was not even considered for this test , and somehow they were deemed to be equally effective

OK thats it, i think that it theres a chance for the pirate to still win, but it was tested very unfairly in my opinion

i thought the other matchups were greatly done and perfectly fair, and look foward to the next one!

OK so i was wondering did anyone else notice that when the Knight and Pirate fell that it was in the wet sand. I know that a black power will more than likely fail if the powder gets wet. so my question is why was the pirates gun unaffected by the wet sand. So if anyone would get an answer to me i would be great full.

The pirate was a sailor who fought, and not a trained warrior as a knight would have been. The spiked blow to the pirate would have ended the fight right there. No unarmoured pirate would have sustained such a blow. Further, these "experts" have little more than their knowledge gained by watching B rate movies.

Knights were the best trained, best fed, best equipped warriors of their day, on horse and on foot. Even a pirate equipped with a blunderbuss would have a tough time bringing down a knight. Further to that, the flintlocks would not work after laying in wet sand. Flash powder has a way of attracting moisture. Also, by the time the pirate had that grenade lit, the knight would have had at least one blade into him.

Clearly, spike needs to re-think their programming. While the testing does show the lethality of the weapons, no person can truly claim experiencing these things so its all speculation at best. THe bias of the computer geek is clearly evident and this takes what little credibility the tests have and puts it into the grenade with the rest of the shrapnel.

At best, its poor entertainment supplemented by some barely acceptable testing procedures. Best if spike put on mud wrestling with sexy chicks instead. At least someone would be appreciated.

THE GRENADO HAD 200 KILLS?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!? IT DID NOT PEIRCE THE ARMOR!!!!!!!!!!! THE ONLY EFFECTIVE WEAPON WAS THE BLUNDERBUSS BUT STILL....IT DOESN;T HIT THE TARGET MOST OF THE TIME AND SOMETIMES DOESN'T EVEN FIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE BOARDING AXE DIDNT DO ANY DAMAGE BESIDES MAKING A SMALL HOLE IN THE HELMET WHICH WOULDNT EFFECT THE KNIGHT AT ALL. THE FLINTLOCK PISTOL ONLY MADE A DENT IN THE ARMOR AND THE GUY SAID THAT HE WOULD CARRY 4 PISTOLS WHICH IS BS AND SHOOT THE SAME SPOT.....BUT HOW COULD HE DO THAT IF THE KNIGHT IS MOVING AROUND AND IT MISFIRES?

The knight should clearly be the winner. I agree that the knight has less vision than the pirate but the armor and weapons combined just made the pirate look like a test dummy. I dont know how you said that the longsword and the cutlass were the same. The longsword made a perfectly clean cut and the cutlass barely made it through AND IT WAS SLASHING! CHAINMAIL IS DESIGNED TO STOP SLASHING WEAPONS WE WITNESSED A KATANA (A MUCH BETTER BLADE THAN THE CUTLASS) GET DENIED BY VIKING CHAINMAIL

Honestly, if technology won this fight then the worlds greatest warrior is any us soldier or marine. The fight would be over at 300m every time--or at least 100m.

    BS.

They did great in avoiding and dodging the hard questions...what is the point of the show if they choose to dance around questions like pricks.

    Dayhun

First of all this is a great show, BUT I do disagree with some of the things with the Ninja vs spartian match. My biggest problem was the black egg with ground glass. If you get even a little glass in your EYE it's over. One of the Ninja's skills was steath. I don't think you guys gave that much thought, a good Ninja would have been well versed in the art of war. There for he or she would have never attacked an unknown enemey ( and no ki ya's before they strike, lol).

300 was a movie Spartians were not the worlds best warriors, any calvery wood have crushed them. I read that the ideal that Spartians were trained from birth was a myth, like the Samurai the larger part of there armys was made up of mercinares and poor people. The well trained were captians and cheafs, not on the front lines. I also see that some of the warriors were projected to be very strong and bigger than there opponents. Modern day Americans are the biggest strongest and fastest on average, anybody else in the past were about the same size. The only warriors that were trained from brith were the Zulu and the Howrang, you can prove it becasue they still do.

So I hope you guys keep doing this for a long time. Here are some you problably didn't think of English, German, And Spain's fencing schools, Zulu, any southeast asia fighter( aka thai fighters), Mongolans, Howrang, Arabian nights, shaolin monks and Goths just to name a few.

I think they should switch up a few of the combos for season 2

    Knight vs Samurai

    Ninja vs Apache

and so on. Some of the fights so far i think have been unfair to some of them because of who they are facing.

    Pirate VS Knight

The pirate obviously won. Everyone is complaining about "THE GRENADO HAD 200 KILLS?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!? IT DID NOT PEIRCE THE ARMOR" (quote from ro-man95) Thats because the knight isnt covered form head to toe in armor. Most of him is but not all. If that goes off right next to his head hes going to get it through the eyes and in the little spots where he has no armor. Thats what its made to do. Also a lot of the time a pirate would dual weild two cutlass's or a axe and cutlass and so on. However the pirates should have been killed more times then they had been. A lot of it was messed up in my opinion but i still think the better person won. Also since they were on land (is guessing thats what the sims were on) the knight has the advantage. On a boat the pirate does. So where they are fighting should also be taken into consideration. Take more things into account and i think things would be a lot fairer
